Here is two models for you.
"General" American 4-4-0
http://www.mindspring.com/~lewval3/Lgo/Trains/General/general.htm
Opposite drive wheels are connected, even though the large wheels only have
metal pins. I use a system of tape, axle pins, and joiners to connect them.
Cass Scenic Railroad Shay #5
http://www.mindspring.com/~lewval3/Lgo/Trains/Shay/shay.htm
Massive 9wide train. Pistons move with a seperate motor.
Both engines are actual trains that exist today. The General exists in a
Civil War Museam in Kennesaw Ga. The Shay is still in operation on Cass
Scenic Railroad in West Virginia.
