Michael,
We're glad that you have an interest in LEGO® trains. Just posting to this
newsgroup displays your enthusiasim for this, the greatest of all LEGO®
themes! Let me tell you how I got started in this wonderful hobby. I had
grown dissatisfied with the NMRA and N scale model trains in particular.
After a visit to the GFLTC's display layout at the winter 2000 GATS show, I
knew that I was hooked. So I sold my existing N scale collection and used
the 'proceeds' from this to fund my reawakening from my dark ages.

You are sooo right about that....Train Collecting is very cool, but I think
Lego can be even cooler because you now there is sooo much different stuff
available <if you look in the right places> (and everything is basicly
compatible....all the old (4.5 V or 12 V) can run on the 9V track, all you
need is the 9V motor!
If you don't like the design, you can scrap the train, and build yourself
one you like (if you have the right pieces!!)

What I'm trying to say is that go ahead and give the trains a try, esp. now
with some good stuff being released. I'd recommend set 4565 if still
available from Shop At Home service, and you can find a good speed regulator
on Ebay or Brickbay too. You can always add on later, that's the joy of the
LEGO® experience. And you're always welcome to post questions (and solutions
too!) to LUGNET. Play Well-Harvey

Ohhhh Definitely.....I was slighly apprehensive at first about getting into
Trains, but I find that 75% of my lego spending budget (give or take a
few percentage points) is devoted to Train.  I started collecting the
theme like two years ago, and have nearly all the 9V trains....including
2 1/2 metroliner sets (9 Cars including 1 Club Car)....the only set I
need really is 4565 Freight and Crane Railway....(which is still available
at Shop @ Home....)

Side Note: 4565 was introduced in 1996 (that is a long run time for set
availability).  I guess a combination of too many sets being produced
coupled with the fact that it is a more expensive Lego set....
well they all are....I shudder at the fact that we'll be seeing the
4561 Express Train for a long, long time....you see the train all over!!
Anyways....yes, the 4565 is a great train set (even though I don't have it
yet - I plan on acquiring it by Christmas (this year!!!))

Harvey is right...all you need is some track, a speed regulator, a motor,
and the rolling stock available from Shop @ Home....the my own train
engine, either the cargo car (s) and caboose, or a couple of passenger
cars, and voila!!!!!!!!  you have a neat looking, totally awesome Train!!
