(...) Good question, Ted. That is what Ross did with the old 4.5 motor block-- he simply cut the ends off of a 4.5 volt wire and a 9 volt wire, spliced them together, and ran the 4.5 motor off of the power from the 9 volt train motor. JOHN (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Well, I have finally made an attempt at converting my Emerald Knight to run on the 9 volt track. Using the Power Functions as show in the instructions and a non functioning train motor unit I was able to make the engine run. I gutted the motor (...) (15 years ago, 30-Nov-09, to lugnet.trains)

Recently my father gave me several boxes of O-Gauge track, a transformer, two powered engines, a dummy engine, and about half a dozen cars of various sorts. (...) You have to be careful here. The controller is designed to take AC or DC, but the input diodes that that convert the AC to DC are only rated for 1 Amp (1000 milliampres). (...) Hello, you can put AC or DC voltage at the input of the regulator with no problem as long as you don't put more than 9VAC~14VDC. The internal circuit will take both.
