Do you know if the Panel 1x2x3 comes in trans-white or "clear" I have found
people on bricklink selling trans-red and trans-light blue but no clear - do
they exist??

Yes, they do.  A good place to check out such questions is Peeron.com.  First,
check out the parts ref and find your element:

http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/

Then follow the link to Peeron.com, which will show you which colors were made,
and when they were made, and in what sets they came.  Very excellent resource!
Thanks again to the Bogers who created Peeron:-)

I am very much a novice at this having just picked up LEGO for the first
time for about 20 years - so go easy on me if I'm being disrespectful in
suggesting that LEGO parts should be altered, I'm finding some of the
limitations of the bricks a little frustrating at the moment.

The limited availability is frustrating sometimes-- and expensive acquiring the
rare bricks besides!  Most of my MOCs are months in the creation-- I have
learned to have about half a dozen projects in the works to keep me occupied in
the mean times.

Welcome back from your Dark Ages, and Good Luck!
