Some Central and South American countries operate tillers. These
apparatus are usually donated to cities down there from US
departments, and aren't newly delivered apparatus. I'm not sure if any
new tillers have been delivered outside the US. As was stated in other
followups tillers are mainly in use in areas with tight streets,
though this isn't always the case. When I was in California, in the
San Fransisco area, every ladder I saw in a two week period was a
tiller, even those ladder companies in the suburban areas. It's said
that a good tiller driver and tillerman can put a tiller in places
where a regular pumper can fit, and where a straight frame aerial
(rear mount) couldn't even dream of going.
Many departments around the country are now operating Tiller Quints,
with L.A. County being the largest operator of such apparatus so far.
They keep the manuveribility of the tiller with the multipile
functions of a quint, interesting idea, but hardly new. Many tillers
have had booster equipment/soda-acid tanks for years now, including
Detroit. Last I checked all of their ladder companies, including
tillers, were outfitted with high pressure booster pumps and water
tanks due to the large amount of nusiance fires there.

At one time Boston only operated tillers as their regular ladder
companies, not including the Tower units, even when most other cities
had gone, or were going to rear mounts. E-One lent them a rear mount
some time ago, and the rest is history. FDNY operates 12 or so
tillers, down from 15, having recently replaced 3 tillers with rear
mounts. FDNY lost quite a few apparatus in the 9-11 attack so I'm sure
some companies are operating reserve apparatus of types they might not
normally operate, i.e. a rear mount replaced by a tower. In recent
video's I've seen, it looks like FDNY lost two newer Seagrave tillers
assigned to Ladder 5 and Ladder 6, though they may have lost more.
I've seen older Seagrave tillers assigned to those units and I'm sure
they will get new tillers for them eventually as they both operate in
areas with tight streets, Ladder 5 in Soho, and Ladder 6 in Chinatown.
A few years ago Ladder 6 was assigned a newer Seagrave rear mount, but
this unit was unsuitable for the company and was reassigned to another
company and replaced with a tiller.

I've been working on and off on my own new Tillered Quint. I built one
of them quite some time ago for Sixby Fire Tech, but it only held 4
minifigs, the one I've got in the planning stages will seat either 5
or 7. I hope finish this apparatus by then end of next year, I've just
been so busy with other things. I've still got a few apparatus to
upload to the site, along with a minor text update, but again, this is
delayed.
Keep up the great building everyone! Even though I don't have much
time to build myself, I still visit everyone's sites often.

| I did a search on Google.com, "Seagrave tillers", I wonder what "tiller" would pop up, Portland FD has a few tillers... Josh (23 years ago, 23-Dec-01, to lugnet.town)
