Well, The Construction Site (Waltham, MA) has some of the new Race sets
in, and I picked up a couple of the smaller ones. The reviews should go
up on my site sometime this week, but I thought I'd share some general
thoughts and impressions here.
Starting with the minifigs (the first thing I always put together...)
The face designs have a very "cartoony" feel to them - they're very unlike
the more "realistic" faces used in, say, the Star Wars sets. The mouths
on the 'figs I've got stretch wider than the eyes, but it honestly doesn't
look that bad. I think the new faces show a lot of personality. One cute
touch I noticed: on the Scorpion, Shark, and Alligator racers, the animal
pictured on their chest is very definitely the LEGO version of the
animal...
The vehicles are a nice change from Town Jr as well. Although the ones I
got both used a 'vehicle plate', they're still far better than the recent
stuff I've been seeing. The Turbo Tiger is probably the better designed
set - it's got some very clever use of pieces. On the other hand, the
Scorpion Buggy has a rubber-band rear-wheel suspension, which is very
cool. I will probably wind up getting the big monster truck set as
well...
To address a previous thread about helmets and hair, it looks like each of
the racers gets a helmet *and* another form of headpiece. Tiger Guy gets
a black ball cap, Scorpion Guy a red bandanna, and Gator Gal the green
hair. (No idea what Sharkie gets.)
Overall, this theme is very different from previous Race themes, which
seemed to do a lot of Formula One/Indy Car racing. This one is more like
what you'd see at a truck show advertised with a lot of reverb - I expect
car crushing, mud racing, tractor-pulling action as opposed to a bunch of
guys driving in a circle. It should be interesting to see how popular
this is.
