Thanks for your reply.
My point is that I don't mind the "latching". What I do mind is the huge
amount of friction that is preventing the hook from winding down on its own
when *free*.
I own both of those sets (8462 and 8280), and in my 8462 tow truck, it
unwinds on its own as soon as I lift the ratchet lever a little bit. It
works very smoothly, just as it does on the 8460 crane truck.
As for 8280 fire engine, true it doesn't unwind on its own, but it's
supposed to be a very thick water hose. Those poor firemen are under stress
enough when there's a fire, they don't need the hose out of their control :-P
So what I'm looking for is a way to reduce the friction on the 8854 to allow
the hook to descend on its own, without having to unwind manually, and
without going on a major redesign of the crane arm.
