I have a question: Is the 16t idler gear driven directly from the micro
motor? I don't think I've ever seen that done before!

Yes it is, but I can't recall where I've found that assembly  - I think
somewhere on Brickshelf.
It works quite good: the idler gear doesn't slip until you put a high load
on it, and the slipping prevents micromotor jamming. The drawback is that,
after slipping a bit, the gear tends to detach from the micromotor.
