Thanks; wow, this is quite a comprehensive site! They seem to have detailed
inventories for just about every set. I need to check out some of this stuff
more carefully...

That is interesting, since I remember that the transparent tubing was talked
of as a new feature around here when the 3800 Ultimate Builder set was
released. Perhaps most people have not see it before, although this is the
only set older than 2000 that I have seen with it. (e.g. the older 8854
version, 8862, 8868, 8460 and 8459 do not have it)
