My tower crane was done from just looking at cranes working locally (and the
occasional chat with an operator - around here they're generally happy to
have a chin-wag if they see you checking stuff out). And I was lucky when my
local TAFE had a course for crane operators - they set up a small tower
crane in the car park, and I got to watch while they were training!

What's a TAFE? I mean, really.

Sometimes getting you lot to explain your local abbreviations is like, well,
like a TAFE pull.

More seriously I am guessing it's a union?

The union that represents unionised construction equipment operators has a
big park where they give training on stuff like bulldozing, earthmoving and
the like, it's in Howell, close enough to Detroit to be useful but far
enough out in the country that land isn't too expensive (although that lot
can afford it with the dues they extort, er, collect from their members).

Sounds neat though. Tower cranes are used a lot more in Europe than they are
in the States. I saw some (really tiny ones) being used in Switzerland on 2
story house remodels! (no doubt due to the tight clearances they're more
practical)
