My CAT 797 Mining Truck is near completion. Everything works the way I
wanted accept for the air compressor. I bought new pneumatic parts from PLD
and tested my mechanism with the large hand held pump. Everything worked
fine so I built a few versions of air compressors found on these websites.
http://legolinks.tripod.com/Pneumatic.htm Using one small pump seems to work
better than using two yet, neither version works well enough to move my
mechanism. When using the large hand held pump all I needed to do was pump
15-20 times into the air tank and everything works fine. I could use some
suggestions on how to fix this problem.

I am guessing that your compressor is stalling out before you get enough
pressure.  The pressure in the compressor is high enough to react the torque
of the motor. The fact that you have better results using one cylinder
instead of two supports this (with two cylinders you can pump up to only
half as much pressure since you have twice the piston area).

Max Pressure = Motor Torque / (Piston Area * Lever Arm)

If you want to boost the pressure there are a few things you can do.

1. Add a second motor to get more torque
2. Use gear reduction to get more torque
3. Reduce piston area by using fewer cylinders.
4. Reduce lever arm by using a 24 tooth gear instead of 6 holed pully wheel
to pump the cylinders

I recently made a compressor that used 4 gear reduced motors and 2 small
cylinders.  I used no gear reduction because I needed a lot of pressure, and
a short recovery time.  It worked pretty well.  I just tested it with only
one cylinder, and could build up enough pressure to blow the hose off the
air tank.

One more thing that I forgot to mention. If you don't use the full stroke of the pump cylinder when pumping, make sure you position the cylinder so that you "bottom out" when the piston is fully retracted. Air will only flow from the atmosphere into (...) (23 years ago, 6-Mar-02, to lugnet.technic)
