Have you ever noticed that 8 Technic Bush 1/2 Type 2 pieces aren't quite 4
studs wide? This presents a problem when building a drive train. After
awhile these pieces move and the gears stop meshing together thus losing
power to the drive train. The only way to fix this is to make the drive
train wider than 4 studs. Does anyone else have suggestions?

I usually try to back up my gears with a Technic brick connected to the
surrounding structure. This ensures proper spacing, but is really only
necessary for high torque applications. Having a support close to the gear
ensures that the drive shaft won't be deflected much and the gears won't skip.

Of course having skipping gears can be a sort of "clutch" that will give out
when the torque is too high, but this can be bad for gear teeth!
