I usually try to back up my gears with a Technic brick connected to the
surrounding structure. This ensures proper spacing, but is really only
necessary for high torque applications. Having a support close to the gear
ensures that the drive shaft won't be deflected much and the gears won't skip.
Of course having skipping gears can be a sort of "clutch" that will give out
when the torque is too high, but this can be bad for gear teeth!
