There is a purpose in the size of Technic bushings. If they were any wider,
your gear train would bind, In real life gear trains, Shimming washers are
used to adjust gear positions for mesh, decreasing backlash and to reduce
friction. If you are creating a model that exceeds the norm, you will have
to resort to some shimming (washers) to make needed corrections. If you are
a real "purist", cut them from Lego boxes.  I use metal washers as they do
not add friction to the gear train.

Have you ever noticed that 4 Technic Bush pieces aren't quite 4 studs • wide?
Have you ever noticed that 8 Technic Bush 1/2 Type 2 pieces aren't quite 4
studs wide? This presents a problem when building a drive train. After
awhile these pieces move and the gears stop meshing together thus losing
power to the drive train. The only way to fix this is to make the drive
train wider than 4 studs. Does anyone else have suggestions?
