8480 landing gear

I now have my shuttle completely built, and it was a blast building it
(and now playing with it)!   I'm wondering, though, if I have the
landing gear built correctly.  The gear works, but it's very stiff,
and when trying to retract it, it doesn't really go back in place
without a little help pushing the wheels (front one).  Unfortunately
the spring for the front gear is completely buried and I doubt I can
do much about it without disassembling the model, I was just wondering
what other people's experience with the 8480 landing gear is.

(...) I'm sure it goes like clockwork - certainly I noticed nothing amiss when I built it, although admittedly this was some time ago and my memory may be at fault. One thing I did notice was that the large bevel gears in the gearbox responsible for (...) (23 years ago, 29-Aug-01, to lugnet.technic)

(...) I seem to recall I had to adjust the meshing of some bevel gears to get it just right, but if you line them up just like it shows on page 37 (step 23), it should work fine. Also, you were asking about the correction sheet - in fact it's really (...) (23 years ago, 29-Aug-01, to lugnet.technic)
