I built a simple solar-powered hexapod last weekend with some new parts
I ordered from Pitsco. The walker is quite slow, using the LEGO solar
cell to power a 5225 9V motor, which drives a worm gear coupled directly
to a 24T gear. I've found the LEGO capacitor to be quite useful in this
implimentation, as it charges to full after about 20 seconds in direct
sunlight, and provides the motor with power for about a full minute
after the walker is moved into darkness. My cat *hates* it. Here's a
photo if anyone's interested:

Great model.

Would the solar cell power an RCX unit?

I built a large model of the Mars Rover using an RCX and adding a Solar
Panel would be great

Regarding the solar powered walker and the mars rover, both are cool looking robots! I find that solar panel particularly interesting. Perhaps put a solar panel on each side, with each panel connected to one side of the robot... So when there is (...) (24 years ago, 20-Mar-01, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic, lugnet.dacta)

(...) I couldn't possibly imagine a single solar cell powering an RCX. Maybe an array of ten? The solar cell barely has the juice to drive the 5225 motor, and that's both under direct sunlight and under a 2 million candlepower spotlight at 6 inches. (...)
