Wha?

So do I need more powerful motor? A bigger battery box? I would have thought
that you need much more power to start the rotors spinning than you do to keep
them spinning, so I'm surprised that it starts just fine but then seems to run
out of steam. Any suggestions?

Hi Magnus,

a variety of reasons comes to mind:

- Are you using a rechargeable battery? The 9V types of rechargeables sometimes
lose power too quickly for such a rather demanding application.

- If you let the motor run freely (i.e. without any load attached), does it show
strange behavior like varying rotation speed or screaming noise?

- If all else fails, have you checked the attached transmission whether it may
simply have too much friction in the long run? If the motor is brought to a halt
due to friction, that will drive up the resistor effect of the motor, resulting
in - among other effects - the lights to fade as well.

After all, the old 9V motor is not exactly a powerful device. It could be that
you would be better of using one of the newer so-called "Power" motors, which in
turn have a very low rotation speed, so the heli wouldn't look as realistic
anymore. Everything has its drawbacks I guess...

Regards,

Jerry

Hello, I wondered if any motor-savvy Technic experts out there could help me out with a problem. I'm building a helpicopter, and am powering two rotors plus a light and sound double red light with a single old motor: (URL) a light and sound type (...) (16 years ago, 14-Jul-08, to lugnet.technic)
