I'm looking to mount both 43362/71427 and 2838 styles of motors, but I've no
idea how to make it a fairly rigid studless design that doesn't bend too
much.  Any and all ideas appreciated.

I would consider the use of technic bricks and plates surrounded by bricks
that have technic holes in them to be okay, as long as it's a fairly common
part.

Naturally 2838 would have a different style of power connection to
43362/71427, the latter being powered from above.  Interchangeable mounts
would be good, as I could then consider the effect of different motors on
the same construction.

How about putting these on top:

with the motor studs in the holes?  for 71427 or 43362 use two each side,
leaving the 9V connector free.  A 2838 motor could have 5 each side.

Try these on the bottom:

Put some plates on the motor to make the distance between the top and bottom
fixings into a round multiple of 8mm.

If you want interchangeability, use 2 of 6536 each side for all 3 motors since
they all have the same distance from the axle to the studs over the top of it
for the first 2x4 area behind the axle.  One 2444 underneath each side is also
possible, though it makes it more difficult to change motors.

(...) Another option is this part: (URL) matches the geometry of the modified plate with pin hole that you proposed using for the bottom rather well. There *is* a mate for this BTW: (URL) I find I use the modified 2x2 plate more often, as it's (...) (19 years ago, 27-Dec-05, to lugnet.technic)
