Specifically, Im trying to come up with a way to have two pieces rotating
in opposite direction along a stationary shaft which extends all the way
through the mechanism. The drive for the rotating components should be on
the stationary portion so it can be motorized.

Bad form to reply to myself twice in the same thread, but Ive figured out a
solution. Wish it were a bit smaller, but thats life with limited gear
geometries...

So what was the solution?

(Click for the LDraw
file)
The green bricks have axle holes with a stationary 12x axle running through.
The drive input is to the z16 clutch gear at the top. The yellow and blue
sections rotate in opposite directions at the same speed.
Doubling the gears by mirroring the assembly about the 12x axle is recommended
to reduce the load per gear. Please let me know if you can come up with a more
compact solution. Also, feel free to render and post instructions from the LDR
if youd like to. --Bram
