One reason that the boxes are too big is that technic parts overall have gotten
smaller, which means that more pieces fit in a smaller area. The actual amount
of pieces in each set has increased since almost all technic sets are studless.
I also think that they try to make the picture on the box the same size as the
finished kit. Since they want to show the picture at an angle, obviously the
box needs to be bigger. (In order to get a life-size isometric/perspective view
of a lego kit on the box, the box needs to be bigger than the actual creation
itself). If what I said does not make sense, try putting a picture frame (with
the same 2-D length and width of the box) around the Enzo at an isometric angle.
They can't just put a side profile on the box because that would not show the
depth of the object-therefore it would not sell as well.
However, I think that thier boxes could be flatter to eliminate that extra
space.
