Pierrick.

I have used the Technic swashplate in a 1:20 scale Apache helicopter, including collective and differential pitch control. The scale is about right for Technic figures.

I modded the splined ball by filing the axle hole a bit so that it would slide along the axle.

The pitch control was done by lever addition of the collective and differential pitch, each one feeding one end of a lever (a 5L Technic plate)and the centre of the lever pushing the swashplate. The swashplate has all four ball joints used. I used wishbones for strength.

I used rotary transmission from the joysticks and collective pitch lever to the rotor assembly, using crankshaft parts to turn that into the vertical movement for the levers. To save space in the rotor assembly, I modded some parts in the crank mechanisms.

In 1:20 scale the rotor blades are about 1m long each, so they droop when not rotating! My intention was to use two 12V train motors to power the rotor, since that would give 16W maximum power, but now an RC car motor might do instead.

I used significant amount of parts to ensure that the heavy blades would not fly off when rotating! The pitch of each blade is received on steering parts with one ball joint and two socket joints.

The rotor works quite well, though putting a differential pitch on the blades (changing angle during each rotation) puts significant load on the motor. Changing the controls too quickly can cause the mechanisms to fail, but slow movement over the full range works well.

Sorry, I don’t have any pics online as I took them in 1997! Sadly, I haven’t finished the helicopter since then, having done more trains instead, but I don’t rule it out for the future.

The tail rotor collective pitch mechanism works too. It is made from plates with clips, since technic parts were too bulky. I’ve yet to connect the rudder pedals to it with flexes though.

Mark
