I have succesfully done the same with 4 of the cylinders from the 8455 set.

Has anyone tried to open the cylinders and repair them and then put them
back together?

| (...) Yes, I have, see above. It was not easy to get the black cap off, but it can be done without damage to the parts. Only damage was to one of my fingers, but it fixed itself within a few days ;-) Martin (21 years ago, 4-Apr-04, to lugnet.technic)
