The wheels apparently also don't steer like in real life.

The photos I've seen of the Lego model turn like this:

Left-turn, overhead view.

In photos and video I've seen of the real rovers turning, they make a • circle
with their wheels and perform a zero-radius turn:

Overhead view again.

This allows it to spin in place.

Of course, to go straight, the wheels are like this:

Anyone know if the set can be easily modified to turn more realistically?

from what I've seen on the video:
http://www.maasdigital.com/mervideo-medium.html   (click on the big image)
the wheels do both.  giving directional steering like a car, and footprint
steering like a killough platform.
watching this I noticed that there is something around 4 motors per "leg",
wish I could replicate this.
was working with the differtimento but he's got some specific parts that I
don't have enough of, anyone think that I can use pulleys instead of the
clutch gears?  I'm really interested in the idea of using a skid-steer
mechanism to turn the wheels.  all you would have to do is add two more
wheels and you would get a similar platform to the mars rovers.
BTW, I think that differtimento got the shaft when it came to that
competition, it really was the best one.
