  Purpose of part 32072

Hi, anybody understands real purpose of part 32072: (URL) built backhoe yesterday and I still don't get it, why they haven't used something more traditional there? It would have been 'slower'? Is something like that used in the real world? (20 years ago, 16-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic)

(...) It is a gear that is highly resistant to slip. Since the teeth interlock so much it cannot slip without a very huge failure. Kevin (20 years ago, 16-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Not sure how it's used in the backhoe, but I can think of two nice things about it: (a) two can work together at any opening angle, forming a bevel gear set at non-90-degree angles, and (b) with the studless construction, two of these form a (...) (...) My 'technical' english is quite bad, but... They use it for steering. On of those is on the axle, driven by the 'siren' on the roof, it turns two other which are on 90-degree angle, each one connected to short arm with towball axle which is (...) (20 years ago, 16-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic)

I believe it's so you don't have to align the front wheels. There's only one way the part can go in and the wheels will be correctly aligned. (20 years ago, 16-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic)

Hello everybody, Others have already elaborated on the advantages of this part, so let me just add a picture taken from the 8455 alternate model for those of you who haven't seen the part in its original application yet: (URL) The primary 8455 (...) (20 years ago, 17-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Purpose of part 32072

(...) One use that I have found for that part is when you need a setup that will move one gear in a linear direction and at different points it will mesh with other gears for different outputs. Part 32072 works well for this because it is so easy to (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Purpose of part 32072

I'm thinking that given the compact design of the backhoe digger, it's been used in this instance to perhaps get around the fact that the three-cylinder engine might get in the way. Trying to remember the instructions from memory (at work right (...) (20 years ago, 29-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic)
