I have no experience with the latest LEGO models, so I dont know how the
8466s steering looks like.

As for the 8466s steering, Im surprised to see it getting the thumbs up,
as I seem to remember lots of comments about it when it was first released,
saying there was too much play in it....

Ok, heres a simple setup based on the 8466 steering :-
And another with the other wheel attached :-
The great thing about it is that it has a lot less unwanted movement with regard
to hold the wheel in the steering arm since the rotating part is quite large and
prebuilt. It also provides a very strong way of attaching the wheel to the arm,
effectively with 3 friction pins, much stonger than a single axle.
There is indeed a lot of backlash in the 8466 steering, but I think it could be
improved significantly if care is taken.
Using the above setup with the barcode truck wheels gets you a very low steering
outcome. Of course, you need wheels that are compatible, and fortunately many
are. There was a thread sometime back here detailing ways of attaching older
wheels to these parts, but doing so would probably lose a lot of the benefits.
