The following measurements (given in inches) were made with Starrett dial
calipers. These are really made for 0.001" measurements, so that fourth decimal
place isn't too accurate (say perhaps to the nearest +/- 0.0002"). Also, I
measured 4 parts and took an average. The standard deviation is given in
parenthesis.
1/2 Technic Peg (with stud):
Length: 0.3785 (std. dev.: 3.59E-04)
Diameter Flange: 0.2368 (std. dev.: 4.83E-04)
Diameter Stud: 0.1929 (std. dev.: 2.06E-04)
Diameter Shaft: 0.1843 (std. dev.: 4.92E-04)
* The "flange" is the circumferential lip by the stud end; the "stud" is the
stud on one end; the shaft is the main body of the peg
Brick With Hole:
Width: 0.3091 (std. dev.: 3.86E-04)
Small Diameter: 0.1904 (std. dev.: 3.92E-04)
Large Diameter: 0.2418 (std. dev.: 9.98E-04)
* Small dia. is the normal hole diameter; large dia. is the "step" around the
edge of the hole
** note that when the two parts fit together, the "flange" of the peg fits into
the "large diameter" hole, and the "shaft" of the peg fits into the "small
diameter" hole.
I tried using the micrometer, but it tended to squash parts and consistently
gave smaller readings. The ABS plastic is noticeably soft.
Also, FYI, I've experimented with drilling holes using a variety of drill bits.
I've found that a #11 wire guage bit produces a nice hole that's just big enough
to allow an axle to freely rotate. You may want to mess around with different
sizes to get different fits:
3/16" (0.1875") TOO SMALL
4.8mm (0.1890")
#12 wire guage (0.1890")
#11 wire guage (0.1910")
4.9mm (0.1929")
#10 wire guage (0.1935")
#9 wire guage (0.1960")
5.0mm (0.1969")
The only place that I've been able to find single drill bits of these diameters
is online at McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com).

| (...) Thanks TJ ! We want to do a plate with studs so a minifig can stand on it. Our idea is to drill holes the size of a technic hole so we can put technic half pins with stud on end in the holes. In order to do thatm we need the exact diameter of (...) (21 years ago, 14-Jul-03, to lugnet.technic)
