I have a 27" x 50" x 60" closet area to play with.  Should I

alternative that won't break me financially?

Many people like the small 18/23/60/whatever-drawer units that sell for ~$10,
but in your case (and mine) you need something that makes better use of your
closet's depth - 6" deep just doesn't use the space.  My storage system uses
three basic containers: large Akro-mils industrial plastic bins, approx. 16"
long; closed tackle/tool containers (Akro-mils, Plano, or the yellow ones
from K-Mart (Storit?)), approx. 13" long; and 1.5 gallon Rubbermaid
"shoeboxes", approx. 12" long.  Even those aren't long enough to make use
of your closet's depth, so you are likely stuck using larger containers like
the 11 gallon ones you mentioned.  Maybe you could put smaller containers
inside them?
