Jon--
Good to hear you're getting settled in. I'm
very, very envious.
I've been thinking about this same question,
in anticipation of getting my own "workshop"
back together about 12 months from now. Yes,
I'm ahead of the game, for once, but that's
only because I'm so very somber about being
without my ABS goodness.
I used to use two banquet tables for my work
and display. As you know, I built things that
crossed *both* tables, and a very interesting
problem came up: height miscompare.
If you can find an Ikea that has two of those
things assembled, I'd encourage you to visit
with a tape measure, and put them end to end,
and see what the tolerance is between them.
While it may not be a total deal-breaker for
you, it's indicative of the care with which
such things are made, and might help your
decision. The height miscompare between my
two banquet tables ended up being a sign of
another problem, that of the tilted surface,
which meant that pieces would roll off or
bounce in ways that really infuriated me at
times.
Now, besides that, I'd suggest avoiding wood-
grain; something with a white or grey veneer
would be nice, first of all because it's easy
to spot pieces on it, and second of all
because it's much better for photography.
You may well have plenty of other places to
take your works of art to photograph them,
but when things are closer together, they're
so much easier. Also, you can see on a light
but solid color the buildup of dust, so it
won't be something that sneaks up on you over
the course of a year. Ew.
These are just a few thoughts. I like the
size and sturdiness apparent in the JERKER (heh)
but the other is a far more attractive table.
If you can find the mean of those two without
having to fork out ONE MILLION DOLLARS™ then
I'd suggest that. But really, go to Ikea with
a small level and a tape measure in hand--it
pays off.
best
