Custom shelving. We have custom shelving in a couple places (in the garage,
in the costume/sowing area), and it's amazing how much extra volume you gain
by customizing your space.

In our old place, what is currently on this shelf was overwhelming a full
1/4 of our basement, and a lot of the costumes were not easily accessable.
It was expensive (~1600 US), but is completely customizable, which may be
more than you're looking for. (and in both our opinions, totally worth it)
As a start, I would suggest going to Ikea with the measurements of the
rubbermaid tub you use the most, and buying shelves that fit them closely.
That way you can effectively "stack" them without worrying about them not
holding up to the weight. It also means you don't have to move the whole
stack to get at the tub on the bottom.
I'm not yet at the state where I need custom shelving for my Lego, but I'm
running out of room under my pool table...

James
