Yeah, I had to do that to the AT-AT as well... each of the 6 sloping wall sections are held in place by technic pins (theres 32 connections altogether) so I had to put the 1x2 w/ pin pieces (and some 2x2 w/ pin's) on the outside so you (...)    (...) You are so right!!! Now I just have to find a lt. grey 1x2 brick with a side pin. I also have to get more kits so I can have a few more B-Wings as well as the X-Wings and Speeders.
