Wouldn't it suck if Lucas DID show the AT-ATs being dispatched to Hoth, and it
turned out they just fell from space like meteorites, deploying a bunch of
balloons at a certain altitude so it could bounce and roll safely across the
terrain until coming to a complete stop?

Then the scene might cut to show a command center several planets away, where
for each AT-AT there's a launch technician waiting in a knit sweater, ready to
start dancing and call a press conference once their respective unit starts
broadcasting a signal back to the command center?

(...) As much geek-appeal as that would have, I'm glad Lucas didn't fall into that trap. Part of what made the OT so good was the fact that instead of spending 10 minutes on a few details, he'd spend a few seconds on a thousand details. It has a way (...) (20 years ago, 4-Nov-04, to lugnet.org.us.cedarlug, lugnet.starwars)
