No one really knows for sure what caused R5-D4’s motivator to smoke and explode, but one thing’s for sure: if it hadn’t, Luke would have bought him, Artoo would have stayed back with the Jawas, and the stormtroopers might not have even bothered to make the trip to the Lars’ homestead and turn Owen and Beru into crispy critters. While that would have been a good thing from Owen and Beru’s perspective, Luke might never have left Tatooine, the storyline would have ended there, and Star Wars LEGO sets would never have existed! So, thanks to R5-D4’s explosive indigestion and Owen and Beru’s spot-on impersonations of Cajun blackened chicken, I present...

Nice Moc Mike but you obviously never listened to the Star Wars Radio Saga where R5’s “troubles” were explained. BTW the radio saga is considered canon by Lucas. Simply put, R2, in an effort to get his message to Obi-Wan made some “modifications” to R5 to ensure that a buyer in need of an astromech droid would end up with him. Of course he then tricked Luke into removing his restraining bolt to again get to Obi-Wan. It was Luke in one of his fits of whine that drove him to find R2 and the rest is history. C-3PO’s inclusion in the deal was more fortuitous than R5’s troubles as it turns out. Unfortunately the PreHistroy has been less compelling until now but I still hold out some hope for Episode III.

BTW, Mike, let me know if you want to borrow the radio saga and I will bring it to a NELUG meeting for you.

He doesn’t explode or smoke, and he absolutely refuses to eat the microwave burritos I’ve been cooking for him, but he’s still pretty cool nonetheless. :-)
