My 3 cents worth:
Obi-wan: "Destroyed. By the Empire."
Han: "The entire star fleet couldn't destroy the whole planet. It'd take a
thousand ships with more firepower than I've ..." (seen?)
Traditionally, Destroyers are small escort ships, though have been used
independantly on anti-submarine patrols.
Han first identifies the ISD as a Imperial Cruiser when he and the gang
blasts off from Tattooine - "Looks like an Imperial Cruiser, our passengers
must be hotter than I thought." Earlier he alluded to the ships as being
Corellian - "I outrun Imperial Starships. Not the local bulk cruisers, mind
you, I'm talking about the big Corellian ships."
In The Empire Strikes Back, they are identified as Star Destroyers (Sensor
Tech: "Admiral, there's a fleet of Star Destroyers coming out of Hyperspace.")
While Imperial Cruiser would be correct given the size of the ship and it's
apparent strategic duties, it is called a Star Destroyer as that would be
more in keeping with the Empire's policy of inspiring fear and dread (and
does not reflec it's abilities).
BTW - along these same lines, the Super Star Destroyer should aptly be
classed as a Battleship.
