Note: I realize the following is silly and unrealistic. C'est la vie.
What would be cool and fun is to have a fan-designed Blacktron III. TLC
could justify it as a lowball way to make AFOLs happy. Lego Direct could
coordinate the design process, perhaps collecting submissions in a contest
or voting procedure. LD would need to establish and publish some goals and
guidelines (like, how many and what size sets would be targetted for the
theme and what mix of pieces would be used).
What would be *really* cool (and exhausting) would be for LD to coordinate
final design sessions between the 'winning designers' and LEGO people to
actually take the models from MOC-land to something that LEGO could
release.
If LD marketed something like through S@H (after S@H is really world-wide),
it would be perceived as a boutique thing, and wouldn't threaten major
retailers.
