I agree on this one.  It's interesting that the western powers have this
code of war, because in space, I would think that this could change.

Let's review some possible reasons for war:

a)  Resources - the root of many, many, MANY wars right back to the dawn of
human civilization.
b)  control/power - the opposing power trys to defeat the weaker power to
impose some sort of philosophy - this can be stretched to controlling money,
and in turn that would be resources once again.  But for the sake of
argument, let's say that one bad due tries to impose his/her will on some
other dude.
c)  extermination of one group by another out of pure hate.  We'd all be
lying to ourselves if this has not happened at least *once* over the last
100 years.

And in the interest of not overlooking the flip side of the coin,

d) To stop the oppression caused by another outside force, possibly to
liberate a weaker party and stabilize the region.  I understand that this
can also be once again for resources, and it most likely is, but let's just
say it anyway for argument.

<snip>

Thoughts?

You forgot e) Religious Wars

Those have been going on for eons, and continue today.
