I agree on this one. It's interesting that the western powers have this
code of war, because in space, I would think that this could change.
Let's review some possible reasons for war:
a) Resources - the root of many, many, MANY wars right back to the dawn of
human civilization.
b) control/power - the opposing power trys to defeat the weaker power to
impose some sort of philosophy - this can be stretched to controlling money,
and in turn that would be resources once again. But for the sake of
argument, let's say that one bad due tries to impose his/her will on some
other dude.
c) extermination of one group by another out of pure hate. We'd all be
lying to ourselves if this has not happened at least *once* over the last
100 years.
And in the interest of not overlooking the flip side of the coin,
d) To stop the oppression caused by another outside force, possibly to
liberate a weaker party and stabilize the region. I understand that this
can also be once again for resources, and it most likely is, but let's just
say it anyway for argument.
So, in which case would we want to destroy the hospitals?
a) Maybe - depends on how severe the condition is in terms of lack of
resources. Could happen to us all, people.
b) Once again, maybe, depending on how warped the oppressing philosophy is,
or in reverse if the oppressing philosophy is good and the "bad guys" are
the weaker force who resorts to guerilla warfare.
c) Absolutely. Unless you as the opressing force want to take ownersip of
the hospital. Which is a resources/power combination.
d) This is where the justification of helping the so called 'greater good'
comes into play, and then I can see how people would expect soldiers not to
destroy hospitals. The important thin I guess is that in war, all of the
above becomes incoherently blurred. Lines become fuzzy. So, it's
understandable that in a space conflict where resources are of THE greatest
importance, and if you are shot down in space you die, that hospital ships
would be easy, first targets.
Thoughts?
