Golion was a Godaikin toy.  I was fortunate enough to have him as a kid; a
relative who was coompletely unaware of Voltron picked it up for me for my
birthday one year along with a couple other Godaikins.  I had a real thing for
them as a kid; I still have them and watch eBay for more and dream about buying
them (unfortunately they go for a hefty sum, usually).

To answer your question their are many many cool robots similar to Voltron,
from lots of crazy japanese shows ranging from the late 60s to the early
80s.

Yeah.  Since I haven't seen anyone else mention it, the term usually applied to
things like this is "gestalt".  The Constructicons, for example, formed a
"gestalt".

To be honest I don't really consider these types of robots "Mecha", I
usually use this term for post Gundam and Macross robots - but then thats
just me being picky.

No, a lot of people refer to these types of things as Giant Robots or Super
Robots rather than Mecha.
