With Dragonstar, I thought I DID “build different.” For one thing, I
abandoned using BURPS and Arctic walls this time around. I introduced a new
trim color (yellow), a new bridge design, a new gun turret design, an
improved Wave Motion Gun opening, more canards and fins, different weapons
such as the missile bays on each side, prominent reverse thrusters (those
big “intakes” toward the front), and other different elements along with the
“standardized” elements featured in the previous ships. And I’m in the
process of developing a fully detailed underside, unlike all the previous
ships that were essentially bare because the underside was baseplates. So I
think it offers an array of improvements over the previous ships and, thus,
it already IS different. But maybe it’s not “different” enough for you or
not the “different” you had in mind? • snip
And I’m concerned about
the direction this thread is going, mainly because of Jon’s comments, not
yours. We’re better off steering away from encouraging others to build what
WE want to see and, instead, encourage them to build whatever they want,
however they want. The minute we start putting rules on this or that,
standardizing lugnet.space with “what-is-what” and “who-is-who,” we’ll
defeat the whole purpose of this group and become a bunch of boring,
conformists and elitists.

Hi Dan!  Glad to see your new ship, sorry I didn't post earlier, I've been
kinda busy last couple days.  This is a good thing to get out in the open...
and I see the points on boths sides.

Okay, I want to start by saying I totally agree with the spirit of your
comment that we shouldn't expect others to build what we want.  The last
thing we need is conformity in .space since we all use our own ideas of what
.space travel/combat/fun will be like.

But I want to defend Jon, because I have seen him many times suggesting
people do things a certain way, then he goes out of his way to qualify that
by also saying something to the effect of "My comments are just ideas, feel
free to totally ignore me, and build what you like."

I think you are taking some comments that were meant as constructive as
being malicious... and that's unfortunate!  I know when the group first
started, almost no one offered up serious critiques of each others' work.
We'd post, get a few comments like "cool ship" and that was about it.  Now
that we have gotten to know (and personally like) each other better, we see
a lot more questions about building technique, serious critical comments
about MOCs, and sometimes even suggestions how to do things differently (ie,
'better' in the reader's opinion.

I think it's really great that those conversations are happening.  These
comments about your ship were not meant to make you feel bad or inadequate
as a builder.  I think Jon and Mark were just trying to get you do your
best, not because your newest ship isn't good enough, but because they are
familiar with your early work and each ship you did was a huge surprise
compared to the previous one.  Eash one was "different".  They don't want
you to build like them, they just want to see you do what you do to the best
of your ability.

They probably didn't feel comfortable saying it, I know I don't feel
comfortable giving a serious critisizm of someone else's work, but it speaks
to the fact that really care about your work.  If someone doesn't care, they
won't take the time to say things like that.  Its a risk that you will put
the person off, but IMHO an honest critical comment is one of the highest
compliments you can get as an artist.  It speaks of a respect between
builders and the strength of their feeling to your work.  And yes, I believe
that ship building of this level is an art.

Now of course I can't really speak for Mark and Jon... I am just giving my
impression of what they were saying.  I haven't talked to them about this
yet.  If am wrong guys, let me know.

As for my opinion of the ship, I like it... the things you improved over the
last few capships really stood out to me... especially the lack of
baseplates and BURPs.  The details seem a lot more interesting on this one,
and the bridge is awesome looking.  If you convert the landing gear into
working gear, I will be in such awe.  Even as they are, they look cool.

I also agree that the overall shape is a little samey to the last few... not
bad... just similar in a boxy way.  Maybe the reason the boxiness of it is
standing out so much is because one of the first ships I remember seeing
from you was a red and grey ship that was medium-large sized and had an
amazingly un-boxy shape to it.  The front was rounded, and the walls bled
over into the top and bottom of it in a way that was *really* elegant.  If
you worked that kind of thing into a ship this size it would kick so much
a$$ it wouldn't be funny.

Yes, it would take more time, and I can totally understand if you don't have
the time to do it.  All I can say is I am glad you kept building!

space!

Hey Joel, I appreciate your post and your take on what was said or implied, and so forth. I feel bad that you felt you had to “defend” Jon. That implies that I’m on the offensive when I’m just trying to respond to comments that I didn’t really find (...) (21 years ago, 13-Feb-03, to lugnet.space)
