Whenever I buy a new set I build an alternate or two just to get a feel for
the selection of parts. That's how I determine whether it's worth buying
multiples of a set.
Building within the constraints of a single set (or a handful of random
pieces) is a great way to get past a lull in creativity or come up with new
ideas. It's also a way to kill time without having to dig out the whole
collection.
Compared to unlimited MOCs, alts inevitably look more spartan. So building
them never seems to bring much fame (unless your name is Claude).
