Actually, I can explain the focusing effect. The more light you use, the
smaller the aperture you can use, and the smaller the aperture, the better
depth of field.
Depth of field just refers to the range (in distance from the camera) that
appears in focus. If you have a lot of light (or a long exposure), you can
often get a large range of distances (like from 8 inches all the way out to
2 feet or something will appear in focus), if not, you'll be at the mercy of
the autofocus and only a small range distances may appear in focus. Your
camera isn't really focusing better with the flash; it just doesn't have to
be as precise with the focusing because it is using a smaller aperture
(because it's getting so much light from the flash).
Anyway, long story short: use more light, or longer exposure, which means
either flash or tripod, or lots of natural light. I recommend a tripod and
some nice non-direct sunlight. Hope I helped some. :)

| Heh, yeah, I SHOULD use a sheet or cardboard or something.. Though I've been too lazy to do it yet. =) Something is really weird with my camera though. Auto-focus seems to work a LOOO...OOOT better with flash on. I took a bunch of pictures with the (...) (23 years ago, 30-Nov-01, to lugnet.space)
