Thanks for the reply, André. I've read that the IR emitters are "low-power".
Does this mean the red LED on Spybot would have a longer range than the IR
emitters if used in proximity detection? Since the LED is recessed, I guess is
would have a narrower beam than the IR. Maybe using both IR and LED...

Is there a way to control the IR emitters directly? Is there a way to read the
IR detectors directly? I'd like to be able to use them as Ralphs Hempel
suggests here: http://news.lugnet.com/robotics/spybotics/?n=148, but where the
"source" is any reflective object.

Hello Brian,

As far as I know. Spybot reacts on the IR transmissions from the controller
or an another Spybot. But perhaps you can let the Spybot transmit RCX
messages and receive the reflections from a static object via the light
sensor on the back of the Spybot..
Have fun

This much I know: the Spybot can do proximity detection if what it is detecting
is a well-defined IR-emitting object such as a Spybot controller or another
Spybot.

This I don't know: can it detect passive objects, such as walls and cats, using
its IR detectors?

Try as I might, I couldn't find decipherable reference to the IR detectors in
the spybot .h files. Is there another place I should have looked?

Thanks to Dave Baum, John Hansen, Mark Ferris, and André Koopman for their work
so far! :)
