Thanks for the reply, André. I've read that the IR emitters are "low-power".
Does this mean the red LED on Spybot would have a longer range than the IR
emitters if used in proximity detection? Since the LED is recessed, I guess is
would have a narrower beam than the IR. Maybe using both IR and LED...
Is there a way to control the IR emitters directly? Is there a way to read the
IR detectors directly? I'd like to be able to use them as Ralphs Hempel
suggests here: http://news.lugnet.com/robotics/spybotics/?n=148, but where the
"source" is any reflective object.

or an another Spybot. But perhaps you can let the Spybot transmit RCX
messages and receive the reflections from a static object via the light
sensor on the back of the Spybot..
