It seems that the 4th button is not a channel selector as I originally
surmised--I assumed 4 spybots = 4 channels (one each) but it turns out not
to be so.  Going to 'xperiment more...

Thanks for the pointers! I got three to work independantly now. Rather odd
that with four different robots, LEGO didn't design in 4 differnt channels
as well. The way the remote is set up, it could have worked like David
Koudys suggested.

Anyway, I have another question - in my fiddling with it, at one point I got
controller A to send commands to spybot 1 and 2, while controller B sent
commands to spybots 1 and 3. What's going on here? How was that even
possible? And how did I do it, should I want to repeat this weird configuration?

Is the remote at all programmable? Various missions talk about 'programming'
it, but I suspect that you're just programming the robot as to how to react
when each button is pushed. Does anyone have details on how it works?

Don't you wish they'd supplied a booklet! A couple of diagrams of what communicates what to what and when and how would have been very useful, especially after the batteries start running down and its not clear which element isn't doing what it's (...) (...) I like Ralphs way better... To quickly change b/w 'bots using 1 controller, switch to 'lock mode' (straight down) and press a button (1-3) *without* pressing the 'key' button. This just changes the 'channel' on the controller and not on the (...) (22 years ago, 26-Jul-02, to lugnet.robotics.spybotics)
