The printed manual #1 for the Robotics Discovery Set #9735 may confuse you
while you attempt to follow the Checkpoints on pages 4 through 8. These
Checkpoints allow you to check the operation of the motors, sensors, and
buttons on the Scout. New owners should perform these steps to verify
proper operation of the parts when unpacked and connected. Document
#4129403 appears on the back cover.
1. Pages 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8: You should Reset in each "Checkpoint ..." after
each step #1. You should press and hold down the On-Off button for at least
2 seconds until the Scout resets. The reset will forgive any curious or
chaotic button pushing that may have changed the commands earlier. You can
see the Reset instructions on page 8 under the "On-Off" note.
2. Page 7, Checkpoint 4, Step 3: You should skip it. You do not need to
press Run to simply check the light sensor. You probably still have the
motors connected, so pressing Run will start the motors. When you put your
hand over the light sensor in Step 4, the Scout will beep, but the motors
will continue to run unchanged. You might have expected the motors to
change state, but no, they do not change.
3. Page 8, Checkpoint 5, Steps 2 & 3: You should skip them. Resetting the
Scout in Step 1 would have already set Motion = Forward.
4. Page 8, Checkpoint 5, after Step 8: You should check the Light command
as follows: 9) Press the black Select button until the Light commands
flash. 10) Press the gray Change button until the Brake command flashes.
11) Aim the Scout's light sensor at a light. 12) Press Run. The motors
should start spinning. 13) Put your hand over the light sensor and hold it
there. The motors will stop. 14) Move your hand away from the light sensor
to allow light to reach it. The motors will run again. 15) Press Run to stop.
5. Batteries: a) When interrupted you should Press On-Off to save power;
the commands' settings will remain at the next On and until Reset. b) When
storing the Scout or leaving it for unattended for several weeks you should
remove the batteries.
