Hi, Bill,
Thanks for the info, first of all.
Regarding the pastedGraphic1.tiff, it was removed by my Mcaffee as a suspected
unsafe unattachment. By any chance it may be downloadable from some web site?
Thanks in advance!
Regarding the new web site, yes, I would like to help out... we can perhaps
coordinate this. Perhaps the decision of which domain and website to be used
can take a lower prioriity than a more well-defined goal this site should serve.
Direct connection to the Tufts' CEEO is definitely my first approach, since
they've already had dedicated area for using ROBOLAB. Then, I think it would
also be good to contact the lugnet administrator to see if we, the ones
volunteer the work, can use their resource to build a site.
What I have in mind for the time being include (I have also added yours in) :
1) main page to define the goal, e.g., this is designed to serve as a
knowledgebase focusing on Robolab..., etc.
2) topics are listed as a format of table of content.
3) projects, along with explanation, and possibly video
4) third-party sensors for Robolab
5) special events, such as date for the FIRST tournament
6) glossary page, I agree with you that this should only provide the
medium-to-hard ones since the basics are very well covered by Robolab.
7) Known bugs, version where found, symptom, and their resolution, if any.
8) Jerry Kalpin suggested :
a.. What constitutes a complete up-to-date system
b.. list if there is some upgrades that may only be available in one state,
but not others; shows link or method to get the upgrade (hmm... this can be
harder than we may think, because it may require to search the appropriate
contact from the corresponding legal parties)
9) supplemental documentation
10) a reference page where links to other good lego/robolab site; brief details
for each link
Questions:
1)Web Control? Would you elaborate on this? Do you mean building a web control
panel?
2) discussion of Mindstorms SDK? If my recollection serves me right, there is
already a site for this... I'll see if I can find it again.
3) You mentioned the Robolab setup with XP / W2k, etc. CEEO has already provided
details for. Perhaps, we can just add in links?
Nothing fancy like using macromedia, gif, etc. initially, unless someone
volunteers to build some; nor will there be web services in the initial phase.
my 2cents!
By the way, it is 11:26pm 12/31/2003. I am going to watch the ball drop at NYC
right in front of my TV with a glass of wine... with my husband, and 3 boys...
Wish you all have a great 2004!

Hello Elizabeth,
Here is a note from Chris Rodgers at Tufts you might me interested in. The
.tiff file shows an event in action. I have used Robolab events in some of our
families stuff also.
Take care,
Bill

Subject: Events in robolab
Hi - I read your comments on the lugnet about events - I am the one
responsible for all this - so first - sorry about the limited documentation and
software that sometimes works.
I agree - documentation is really hurting - Eric Wang is working to improve
that - but any help is most welcome - Mitchell - your website idea would be
great - I would be more than willing to help out there. We have been pushing
LEGO for a long time to change that - but so far we do not have them
convinced... What I can do is over the course of next semester is have a student
start putting together examples and a website to cover events, access control,
internet control, etc. Have you all seen the tutorial stuff for the camera at
http://www.ceeo.tufts.edu/robolabatceeo/College/tutorials/image_cli/indexhtm ?
Does that work as a format?
As to events and how to use them - the reason there is little on it is LEGO
has always claimed that no one would use them - they are only in there because I
use them at the college level. There was one bug in them that I fixed in the
latest patches - it was when you were doing conditionals after more than 2
events. You have seen the extended help stuff I assume ("click here for more
help") - if not that is the first place to look - bring up the help menu, do a
mouseover - and in the little help window click on the blue link. Another option
is the pdf in the Support Materials folder in robolab. These are still cursory,
though. The real issue with events is that they measure transitions - in fact
when you get good at them you can define your own events quite nicely. This
means that if you set an event to measure the decrease in the light sensor
reading to below 35 - if the sensor is already below 35 you will not see an
event until the light sensor goes above 35 and then back below. I attached a
simple event code for an example below. They are definitely tricky, though, and
I have developed a few debugging tools to help out - but they never were tested
enough to hit "real time"
Don - you had requested a bug list - you are right - there should be one and
it should be at the lego site - unfortunately I have no control over that site -
I do not think the lack of such a site is insecurity - rather mismanagement -
however you are welcome to email me any bugs you have found - and if you want to
beta test that would be great. We can easily add a bug list to the robolabatceeo
site (we already have a list of bugs fixed there) - the problem is that I do not
have the manpower (or the funding) to staff a complete support website - as it
is, most of the robolabatceeo site is done on volunteer time. So if any of you
want to help out that would be great.
Anyway - if you all are interested in correcting some of these issues - that
would be great - have a good new year and email me if you need any help
see ya

| We can use my site to host a knowledge base for Robolab. I would be happy to help out. I was thinking of doing something similar for the students and teachers I teach anyway.
