The serial ports weren't changed in a major way (still RS-422, etc), but
there could have been subtle changes to the driver/receiver that would
cause problems when hooked to marginal RS-232 devices (such as the IR
tower).
Fred Martin reported some problems with certain flavors of Mac hardware
that were apparently fixed by using a serial extension cable. I don't
recall if beige G3 was a problem model or not.
Make sure that your adapter cable grounds the RxD+ line. I think some
adapters leave this pin unconnected, which can lead to very marginal
behavior.

I've also tried ZTerm to see if I can get an echo back. The Green LED in the tower (...) (24 years ago, 1-Feb-01, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.nqc)
