Your cygwin installation is not working correctly. You shouldn't be
experiencing any instabality as a result of running cygwin & unix commands.
I would uninstall cygwin and try reinstalling it. And then I would not try
to build the gcc cross compiler. I would download the pre-built Hitachi
tools (see recent posts of mine in this newsgroup for a link).
