I searched LugNET news for "legos send message" and came up with at least these two promising threads:

Here's another thread I found searching under "legos remote control". There were others, but it didin't bother to follow them up. Looks like they got LegOS to work with the Lego Remote. If that is possible, they must have developed some equivalent for the SendMessage() and Message() commands.
