Just following up my own message. I have just tried the instructions with
kgcc in redhat 7. It fails with exactly the same problem. All binutils and
egcs compiled normally with kgcc except for the one error specified in the
HOWTO.

The egcs compile did only the common complaint mention in the HowTo.
I have seen a thread here and the person said they were going to
try another distro.
I am going to try this as well but I would like to know if anybody has tried
making the egcs cross compiler using the Redhat compiler kgcc which i believe
is gcc 2.95 and is used on Redhat 7.0 to only compile kernels.
Any hints to either approach would be appreciated or if someone else has
used redhat 7 with success I would like to hear how they did it. Much thanks,

I get the same error with 'makelx' as you describe. I'm running redhat 7.1 with the RPM's liked in the HOWTO. I would welcome any information leading to the resolution of this problem. Just to satisfy my curiosity, I may try to build the tools from (...) (23 years ago, 27-Aug-01, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)
