Hi,
this seems to be a very good idea for a new RCX sensor. Reading the Sharp
data sheets for their infrared distance sensors I want to write some facts
about.
They have 4 different sensors for measuring distances from 10 to 80 cm. The
differences are in the data output of the units. The links are the data
sheets you can read yourself from Sharp.
GP2D02 has an 8-bit serial output which sends the distance value.

GP2D05 has an 1-bit output that shows if the distance has got less or more
than a limit. This limit should be adjusted by a small implemented (??)
potentiometer.

GP2D12 has an linear analoge voltage output from 0.4 V (for 80 cm) to 2.4 V
(for 10 cm).

GP2D15 has again has a digital output. But it's for distances from 3 to 30
cm.

correct!! One data sheet for both units)
For an overview please read

Perhaps we can get ideas for new RCX distance sensors. I think that the
GP2D12 could be the best one??? (I don't know if this is the best for all of
you???) The RCX should get some numbers to know about the world around.
Ralf
p.s.
In Germany Conrad electronics only has the GP2D02 and the GP2D05. I don't
know where to get the other.

| (...) Ralf, If I remember correctly, these sensors draw about 30 mA, which is the limit for a powered sensor for the RCX. You may need to add an additional battery to supply the current....
