These guys have a robot controller that replaces the RCX that uses the

The biggest problems I see with this are that the boards aren't
protected.  The
odd thing is that they're not mentioning the extra battery capacity as
an
improvement over the RCX.  I thought it would be a big problem to drop
from 3AA
to 2AA in the GBA, but I notice that it says some part of the XRC uses 6
batteries (presumedly AA).

I had a good look at this - it does not cost much more than the RCX
(although you need other stuff and motors to use it). The non-protected
boards could be got around with some good Lego construction. Since I
sometimes use custom boards with it - this fits right in.

Its worth noting the the XPort has an FPGA chip on it - which makes it
extremely flexible with and without the XRC. Learning verilog is a
worthwhile goal in itself.

A while ago I ran an artical on Microcontrollers and processors at
http://orionrobots.co.uk/features/microcontrollers.shtml - I should
probably add this to it and update it this week.

Cheers,
Orion

(...) Oh, yes it does. Quite a bit more, actually. The original GBA still runs about $70, I believe, or the GBA SP will hit you for $100. $269 gets you both the XRC and the basic no-frills Xport that connects it to the GBA ($338 will get you the (...)
