I tried using a breakout box in response to your last message, and tying
together various wires of an otherwise active connection did not seem to
activate the green LED, which indicates to me that I do not know what I am
doing.  I would at least have expected tying TD to ground might have turned
on the LED.

This might be a really simpleminded circuit. As far as I can tell there
are a pair of 132's (simple HC logic chips) - one for each direction.
They implement direct echo back, which implies that the channel is really
only half duplex - you can't send a packet to the tower while the RCX is sending
info back to you.

I thought about sending BREAK characters or a high-speed (19200 baud) character
that the RCX would reject to keep the tower alive...

The problem is not that critical that I need to spend any more time on it.

Cheers,

(...) I'm pretty sure the echo is not direct, it goes out through the emitters and back into the receiver. This is demonstrated by varying the lighting conditions and/or the baud rate and noting the response. If the echo were direct, you'd receive (...) (25 years ago, 10-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

(...) Mine is like this too, I think. See (URL) compare to see if they look similarly. For me at least, the emitters and detector are slightly above the "clear" section. (...) For me at least, there is no way the components can line up with the (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)
